Is writing your passion? Then you are at the right place!

I have been working as a content creator for 7 years and today I am here to take you through the things you must know before opting content writing as your career. I would not talk about obvious things like working on your grammar but will share simple tricks that can help you to pull off the journey.

  1. Write, Read, and Play.

Many can write, but not everyone can interact. This is where you must draw a line. Once you have finally decided your goal, start bringing basic changes to your regime.

Read as many newspapers and books as you can, play word games, speak the language you want to write in, write, and be consistent. Nothing will be possible without discipline. The simple hack is, the more you will push, the better you will do.

If you are wondering where to start, you can start with your social media posts, as for me, it worked well. Then, start your own blogs on WordPress or any other free platform where you can brush up your writing skills. So, write, read, and play.

2. Explore other genres

Practice writing for all the genres even if that not calls your interest. Sometimes for money, you might have to write about something you haven’t heard of. So, keep your knowledge intact so you can sail the boat whenever required. To start with, read all sections in the newspaper, right from politics, to fashion to sports; and don’t forget Editorial, that will strengthen your base.

3. Know the basics

Creating catchy headlines attract your audience. So read synonyms, quotes, idioms, phrases, jargons of the genre you are interested in. Explore the difference between text writing, social media writing, and blog/article/website content writing. You cannot write an article using the language you use while texting. Similarly, if you are opting for English, know the difference between English used in different parts of the world.

Research and Editing are as important as writing. So whenever you write anything, make sure to proofread till you get a clean copy.

4. Strengthen your vocabulary

Whenever you are motivated, start then and there. Pick one alphabet, find 10 words, make a note, and use it while talking to your friends or siblings or anywhere. If not, make sure to use those 10 words in your next write up for your Instagram/Social Media post or your blog. Otherwise, we tend to forget and we keep losing what we have learned. So, do that!

5. Know your writing style

Every writer has a writing style. You do not need to copy anyone’s style to be a good writer, instead, discover your own style. For instance, I spend a lot of time researching and editing than writing. Find your muse and solidify it so you don’t turn out to be the ‘jack of all and master of none.’

And that is it to start with. Once you have mastered these, I will come back with the next step. Start by listing down your dreams, understand how important money is, and do not take it from your parents. Start taking up little jobs, so you would know the importance of money you will earn through your writing job.
